The Secrets of Ayurvedic Powder for Hair Growth

Transform your hair care routine with the goodness of Ayurvedic powder for hair growth.

Hair fall can be a nightmare for anyone, with strands of hair littering the floor and the fear of going bald looming. But there are various methods to control hair fall, and Ayurveda treatment is one of the most effective ways to grow your hair naturally. Ayurveda has many secrets to reveal that can help to restore your hair growth, using multiple herbs and botanicals to nourish your hair.

Primarily, it is essential to understand that Ayurveda believes that hair is linked to bone tissue, the nervous system, and gut health.  A ‘weakening’ in any of these areas is likely caused by a dosha imbalance, which can manifest in dry and brittle hair, hair loss and thinning, or excess oil and greasiness.

Ayurvedic herbs for hair growth can address the root cause of hair problems and create a splendid outcome, unlike the mass-produced hair care products that promise quick fixes but may contain harmful ingredients that damage your hair and skin. Let’s find out the different ayurvedic powders for hair growth and their benefits.

Bhringraj Powder/ False Daisy Powder for Hair Growth

Ayurvedic power for hair growth, false daisy
False Daisy or Bhringraj

One of the most recommended ayurvedic herbs for hair growth, Bhringaraj (Eclipta prostrata) is a  wonder herb also known as “false daisy”. This herb has been the go-to for centuries to promote luscious, long, and strong hair. With its incredible benefits for both hair and overall health, Bhringaraj is an absolute must-have in any beauty routine.

This member of the sunflower family has been mentioned in various Ayurvedic scriptures under different aliases like bhring, markav, angarak, keshraaj, bhringaar, and keshranjan. The Sanskrit scriptures of Raj Nighantu classify Bhringaraj into three types based on the color of their flowers: white, yellow, and blue.

But how do you use Bhringaraj for your hair? It’s simple! Mix ½ – 1 tsp of Bhringaraj powder with coconut oil to make a paste, apply it to your scalp and hair follicles, and cover your hair with a shower cap. After 1-2 hours, shampoo your hair and rinse thoroughly. Use this hair pack thrice a week to combat hair fall and prevent premature greying of hair.

Hibiscus Powder for Hair Growth

Ayurvedic Power for hair growth, hibiscus powder

Hibiscus, native to Asia and Egypt, has been a part of beauty routines for centuries. It’s rich in vitamin C, and amino acids and has antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. It can be used in teas, food supplements, and hair routines. The vitamin C in hibiscus stimulates hair growth and boosts collagen, while the amino acids nourish and strengthen the hair. This herb can also combat oily hair and dandruff. Hibiscus is a must-have for healthy, voluminous, and thick hair.

To use hibiscus powder in your daily hair routine, mix hibiscus powder with equal amounts of alma powder and mustard oil (or coconut cream) for a hair mask. Leave it on for one hour and wash it with a mild shampoo.

Another way is to mix hibiscus powder with aloe vera in a 2:1 ratio, apply it to the hair and leave it on for 40 minutes before rinsing it out.

The third way to use Hisbiscus hair powder is to mix 3 to 4 tablespoons of the powder with almond oil (or coconut oil) and a few drops of essential oils for a mask. Leave it on for an hour and then wash the hair with a mild shampoo.

Indian Gooseberry/ Amla Powder For Hair Growth

Indian Gooseberry

Amla, a small, round fruit that grows on a tree of the same name is known for its astringent and sour taste. Despite its sour taste, Amla is packed with nutritional goodness that makes it a staple in both food and Ayurvedic medicine.

And the real magic happens with Amla powder, which is derived from grinding the leaves of the tree. This powder has anti-inflammatory properties that make it a sought-after ingredient in beauty products. Ayurveda even considers Amla a ‘divine medicine,’ and it’s easy to see why.

Using Amla powder for hair is said to work wonders, making it healthier, shinier, and even darker. The alkaloids, flavonoids, and amino acids in Amla stimulate blood circulation, promoting nutrient absorption by hair follicles and encouraging growth. And if hormonal imbalance is causing hair loss, Amla inhibits the enzyme 5alpha reductase, which is responsible for triggering it.

But that’s not all. Amla is a potent detoxifier that replaces dead cells with fresh new ones, preventing scalp inflammation, promoting hair health, and slowing down the aging process. Its abundance of Vitamin C even accelerates melanin production in hair follicles, reducing premature greying. Plus, Amla contains tannins that protect hair from photodamage and UV rays, preventing split ends and breakage.

To use amla powder for hair growth, mix it with reetha powder and shikakai powder in equal parts, and add water to make a paste. Apply the paste to hair strands and leave on for 30 minutes before rinsing off with water and washing with a mild shampoo. Alternatively, mix amla powder with henna powder and water to make a paste, apply it to the roots of the hair, leave it on for 45 minutes, and wash it off. Amla powder can also be mixed with coconut oil to promote hair growth, prevent hair loss and greying, repair damaged hair, and give it a darker appearance.

Triphala Powder Against Hair Loss

Triphala is an Ayurvedic recipe composed of three Indian fruits: amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki. The combination of these three fruits aims to balance the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) present in Ayurvedic medicine, which are believed to be fundamental forces in every human being. Imbalances in these Doshas can lead to various disorders and diseases, but Triphala is thought to help restore balance to all three.

Amalaki, one of the fruits, prevents hair loss and nourishes the hair itself, thanks to its antioxidant power. Bibhitaki, another fruit, is used for hair to stimulate hair growth. Triphala has numerous health-giving properties attributed to the presence of secondary polyphenolic metabolites such as gallic acid, ellagic acid, and chebulinic acid.

To prevent hair loss and dandruff, mix aloe vera juice and Triphala powder to make a paste, and apply it on the scalp and hair length for 30 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.

To prevent premature graying of hair, mix coconut oil and Triphala powder, apply on scalp and hair length, massage gently, and rinse off after 20-30 minutes.

To make a hair mask, mix Triphala powder, olive oil, and egg yolk, apply on wet hair, and leave it for 30 minutes before rinsing off with water.

Withania somnifera/ Ashwaghandah

Withania somnifera

Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is a remarkable herb that has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. This adaptogen not only promotes good health for the body but also has rejuvenating effects on the nervous system. Its name, which translates to “Horse” and “Fragrance,” perfectly describes its ability to strengthen and invigorate. Beyond its many benefits, ashwagandha can also help reduce stress-induced hair loss, delay the onset of grey hair, and strengthen the hair and scalp barrier, reducing hair breakage.

Try mixing 1-2 teaspoons of ashwagandha powder with water to create a runny paste. Apply it to your scalp and hair, and let it soak in for 30 minutes before washing it out with a gentle shampoo.

Fenugreek Powder

Ayurvedic powder for hair growth

Fenugreek is a plant that has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The seeds of the plant are used to create a powder that is known for its sweet, nutty flavor. Fenugreek powder is a rich source of iron and protein, as well as active phytochemicals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. It may help with scalp issues like dandruff and reduce inflammation of hair follicles, which can lead to hair loss.

To use fenugreek powder, it can be made into a paste with water and applied directly to the scalp or mixed with other ingredients like coconut oil, yogurt, honey, or milk to create a mask for deep conditioning.
